What do I need to know about dental implantation?
Implantation is a dental procedure with a decades-long history that complements traditional tooth replacements and is the most innovative method of tooth replacement.
Today, it is a routine intervention; highly skilled professionals, combined with technical advances, know practically nothing is impossible.
Dental implantation is the solution for everything from a solo tooth loss to long periods of interproximal or end-of-row missing teeth to complete edentulism.
A dental implant is a specially designed screw that acts as an artificial tooth root when inserted into the jawbone. It is made of titanium (and its alloys), which is highly biocompatible, i.e. well tolerated by the body.
Within 3-6 months, a tight bond is formed between the implant and the host bone tissue: the bone tissue surrounds the implant, i.e. the implant is integrated/integrates (this process is called osseointegration).
The built-in implant is a stable, load-bearing unit: it is able to withstand the loads placed on it and is suitable for fixing a crown, bridge or prosthesis.
The success rate of implant placement is above 95%, with very few complications in a professionally performed procedure and a cooperative patient.
With careful care, regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleaning, the implant can last a lifetime.
The benefits of implant placement
non-exhaustive list:
- prevents jawbone deterioration and bone loss
- no need to grind down adjacent teeth, so they stay intact and healthy
- the remaining own teeth do not move, they migrate
- allows for fixed restorations that, thanks to the innovative materials used today, have the same natural look and feel as the original teeth, providing an impeccable aesthetic experience
- replacing missing teeth improves facial contour, texture and tone, giving a more attractive, youthful appearance
- the fixed replacement provides perfect chewing ability, comfort and security, allowing for tasty meals, relaxed conversations, and laughter
The general process of implantation
(individual variations may apply!)
- Consultation, health check
In all cases, the procedure is preceded by a full assessment and consultation, during which your dentist will answer any questions you may have. The implant specialist will take a panoramic X-ray and 3D CT scan and assess whether your gums and bone structure are in a suitable condition for implant placement. Based on this information and your expectations and options, he will draw up a personalised treatment plan, including the location and number of implants to be placed. He may refer you for other treatments to ensure that you are in the optimum condition for surgery, such as plaque removal and periodontal treatment of inflamed gums. - Preparing for implantation
After tooth extraction, it usually takes 3-6 months to heal before implants can be placed, but in some cases immediate implant placement is possible (All-on-4). - Placing the implant
During the surgery, the oral surgeon inserts the implant screw(s). Local anaesthesia is used, so the procedure is completely painless! Placing an implant normally takes 15-30 minutes and is no more uncomfortable than a simple tooth extraction. - Recovery phase
Depending on the site of implantation and individual characteristics, the healing process takes 3-6 months, during which time the implant is integrated into the bone (osseointegration). In some cases, the patient receives a temporary replacement for this period. - Placement of the permanent denture
At the end of the healing phase, after osseointegration, you will receive a custom-made final restoration (crown, bridge, full denture) based on the impression. The restoration is made of a material that meets the individual needs and possibilities, the most popular today being zirconium, which is strong, durable and extremely precise, satisfying the highest aesthetic demands. - Aftercare
It is important to note that the long-term durability of the implant also requires continuous aftercare and follow-up. During regular check-ups, your doctor will check the condition of the implant and the prosthesis. However, the durability of the implant also depends on you, as dental implants, like your original teeth, require proper and thorough care at home. Without this, the periodontium and gums can become inflamed and the remaining natural teeth can decay. Regular dental hygiene treatment every six months/yearly is important, as plaque and tartar can adhere to any hard surface in the oral cavity, including the artificial restoration!
Who is it recommended for and who is not?
The implant can be a solution for almost all ages, there is no upper age limit. The condition is that jaw growth is complete, which happens between the ages of 18 and 20. In addition, good general health and a sufficient amount of bone are key to the procedure. If all this is given, there are usually no obstacles to implantation.
In the absence of sufficient bone stock, it is usually possible to increase the amount of bone by using biocompatible bone substitutes and special surgical techniques. After bone grafting, a healing period of about 6 months is needed before an implant can be placed.
Some factors affect the outcome of treatment. In heavy smokers and people with poor oral hygiene, the chances of success are significantly reduced. Certain diseases such as diabetes, severe cardiovascular disease and immune deficiency should also be considered. Implantation is not recommended before the age of 18 or during pregnancy.
The types of implants used in our practice
Hundreds of companies around the world deal with implants manufacture implants.
We use high-end products: the Nobel Biocare Replace, Straumann Neodent and Alpha-Bio implant systems.
The foundations of implantation were laid by Professor Bränemark with his developments since 1978. Using his results, the the now market-leading Swedish company Nobel Biocare. have been perfected as a result of many years of development and research.
Alpha-Bio Tec. has been present for more than three decades in the dental implantology market for three decades, during which time it has In 2008, the company was acquired by Nobel Biocare, the world's leading the leading implant manufacturer. Alpha-Bio Tec. products include the SPI and ICE spiral implants. These offer short healing times, fast insertion and a high degree of flexibility. and complication-free, and their durability is assured over the long term. They are ideal for for fixed replacements and to improve the stability of removable replacements They are also ideal for the stability of restorations.
In addition to the above, NeO implants, one of the latest stages in the development process at Alpha-Bio Tec., are now available in our clinic! The technology, based on nearly 30 years of clinical experience, is a further development of Alpha-Bio Tec.'s original spiral implants, retaining and combining all their advantages.
How is NeO different?
NeO implants are designed for even more precise insertion, a more accurate fit, even greater load-bearing capacity and faster healing - good news for both the practitioner and the patient!
