What you need to know about tooth decay
and dental hygiene intervention?
- Dental hygiene treatment to remove tartar is key to maintaining healthy teeth and gums and eliminating dental problems, but regular treatment also has a positive effect on overall health.
- Tartar is a breeding ground for bacteria, whose toxins can cause inflammation in the gums and later in the deeper tissues, the entire periodontium. Chronic inflammation leads to gum atrophy, bone destruction, and ultimately to loosening and loss of teeth.
- Inflammation caused by tartar affects the whole body, weakening the immune system, causing hair loss, skin problems, joint problems and even heart problems.
- Plaque and tartar settle not only on your own teeth, but also on the surface of dentures and prostheses.
- With a healthy diet, proper brushing technique and regular oral hygiene, plaque formation and tartar build-up can be prevented or at least minimised.
- Taking into account individual characteristics, it is recommended to visit the dental hygienist every year/every six months (every three months in extreme cases)!
- Successful dental treatments require tartar-free teeth and healthy gums free from inflammation, so it is worth having a professional dental cleaning before any procedure (filling, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and especially oral surgery!).
Symptoms that indicate the presence of tartar:
- bad breath, bad taste in mouth
- dark red, swollen, painful gums
- when brushing your teeth, eating, even spontaneous bleeding of the gums
- greyish-yellowish, sometimes brownish discolourations, deposits on the on the tooth surface
Factors affecting the rate of tooth formation:
- oral care techniques and frequency
- the lifestyle, individual wrong habits (poor diet, insufficient chewing, constant snacking)
- on tartar build-up predisposing individual bacterial flora, saliva composition
- irregular, congested dentures, uneven filling surface, ill-fitting crown
Steps for oral hygiene treatment
- health check, anaesthesia
- ultrasound plaque removal (depuration)
- manual polishing or Prophyflex treatment by machine, where appropriate
- if necessary, the treatment of inflammation of the mucosa and gum pockets
- personalised professional advice, motivation to develop a good oral care routine
1. Assessment of the state of play
The actual treatment is preceded by a thorough assessment. In case of sensitive teeth, cervical abrasion, receding gums, the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia.
2. Ultrasonic tartar removal
The first and most important step in oral hygiene treatment is to professionally clean the tooth of dental plaque and tartar. During the depuration, we use an ultrasonic device to remove hard calculus above and below the gum line. Ultrasound is only gentle on plaque, it is very gentle on tooth enamel! If necessary, the procedure is supplemented with manual instrumentation.
3. Polishing or Prophyflex treatment
Polishing is done with a brush, a rubber brush, which polishes the tooth surface evenly with an abrasive (granular) polishing paste. In the case of heavy discolouration, deposits, hard-to-reach indentations and grooves, we use the modern Prophyflex sandblasting technique instead of manual polishing. A fine-grained material is sprayed onto the tooth surface at high pressure. The special lime powder and mineral salts remove deposits and discolourations on the tooth surface. This solution is not suitable for people with periodontal disease.
Advice
The full treatment is also a part of the treatment, where we will give you personalised advice on the correct dental care technique, using the ideal cleaning tools for your dentures. Proper care can prevent and delay plaque build-up and tartar formation, so it is important to demonstrate and, if necessary, practice the oral care steps to be used.
After treatment
for a few days:
Especially in cases of persistent inflammation, the gums may become slightly tender and swollen in the few days following treatment. If your symptoms do not disappear within a week, visit your doctor's surgery.
Deep cleaning may cause sensitivity to cold in the teeth, which is also temporary. Use a toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth while symptoms persist.
in the long term:
Make sure your oral care is regular and properly done! This includes care of the tooth surfaces (interdental, inner tooth surfaces, back teeth), gums and tongue!
When brushing your teeth, technique is more important than strength! Use a medium or soft toothbrush, or even an electric toothbrush, to prevent damage to enamel and gums, and to prevent tooth enamel from becoming loose. Clean your teeth in a circular and "sweeping" motion, from the gums towards the crown, and be sure to use dental cleaning tools to remove food debris and plaque stuck in the interdental spaces.
Take vitamins C, D and B to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
What are the benefits of tartar removal?
Stop delaying treatment, which will bring many positive changes to your life!
Provides freshness!
Your breath and taste in the mouth will be fresh and pleasant, and your mouth will be permanently refreshed!
Prevents tooth decay and gingivitis!
By removing plaque and tartar, which provide a favourable environment for bacteria, gum inflammation is eliminated, the chances of tooth decay and tooth loss are reduced, and your whole body feels relieved.
Results in shiny teeth and healthy gums!
After the removal of stains and discolouration, your teeth will become whiter and shinier, giving you a more youthful appearance. Gums that are free from inflammation will regain their healthy pink colour.
Delays plaque re-growth!
Smoothened teeth make it harder for bacteria to adhere to the tooth surface; this also slows down the rebuilding of tartar.
Makes it easier to care for your mouth properly!
Tartar makes it harder to clean your teeth, so maintaining oral hygiene after treatment is easier.
