What do you need to know about professional teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is primarily an aesthetic procedure, an effective way to make your smile more beautiful.

From a medical point of view, it may also be appropriate to use it prior to restorative treatments, as it is advisable to match the colour of the restorations to the whitening restoration.

Even after the orthodontic treatment is complete, we recommend the procedure (along with a professional teeth cleaning) to ensure that your dentures are not only neat, but also shiny!

Today, you can choose to have professional teeth whitening in your home or in our practice. Either way, the treatment can help you achieve a striking change in colour.

Like oral hygiene treatments, teeth whitening is also the responsibility of dental hygienists.

The procedure requires an intact oral cavity, healthy gums, and clean teeth free of cavities, calculus and plaque.

The procedure is completely painless, but the teeth and gums may be slightly sensitive for a few days afterwards.

The quality materials used do not have any adverse effects on the structure of the teeth, so the treatment can be carried out regularly as required.

Whitening only works on natural tooth structure, crowns, inlays, onlays and fillings are not whitened. It is therefore important to whiten the teeth first and then carry out any necessary repairs.

If the discolouration is so bad that it can't be treated with teeth whitening, don't despair! There are countless other ways we can give you the dazzling white smile of your dreams: aesthetic veneers, zirconium crowns, etc.

What affects the colour of teeth?

- inherited traits
- the thickness of the tooth enamel
- age (the enamel thins with age and the tooth becomes darker)
- dietary habits (consumption of coloured foods and drinks)
- lifestyle (smoking)
- use of certain medicines
- deficiencies or over-consumption of certain minerals and vitamins
- structural changes in tooth tissue (e.g. root canal teeth often discolour)

The steps of professional teeth whitening

Preparatory treatments

Whether you choose in-office or at-home whitening, the prerequisite for the procedure is always healthy, inflammation-free gums, clean and smooth teeth free of plaque and tartar.
Our dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth with a complex oral hygiene treatment (ultrasonic scaling and polishing), and our specialists will then remove any inflammation or caries.

How does the ORDER ZOOM teeth whitening work?

  1. The gums are isolated with a protective coating to prevent possible damage or irritation of the oral mucosa.
  2. A whitening gel is applied to the surface of the teeth and illuminated with a special blue light. The UV light, which is harmless to teeth and gums, activates the ingredients in the gel, catalysing the process. You will be fitted with protective goggles for the duration of the treatment.
  3. After a few minutes, the gel is removed and another dose is applied to the tooth surface.
  4. Repeat this process as necessary to achieve several shades of colour improvement. The treatment takes on average two hours.
  5. Because the process takes place on the surface of the tooth, not inside it, the structure of the tooth remains unchanged. In-office teeth whitening is guaranteed to be effective, yet completely safe.

How does OTTHONI bleaching work?

  1. Of course, home teeth whitening starts in our office! Based on the impressions taken here, the dental lab will prepare a precision splint for the upper and lower dental arch that matches your tooth model.
  2. We will explain and show you in detail how to use the rail.
  3. In your home, you apply the whitening gel to this splint and, after brushing, place it on your teeth. After removing the splint, a thorough mouth rinse is required.
  4. Using the whitening gel available in our practice, it is sufficient to keep the splint on the teeth for two hours a day, and the gel will take effect in this time.
  5. The treatment lasts a minimum of four days and a maximum of six days.
  6. The procedure is painless, and it is rare for teeth to become sensitive. In this case, it is advisable to take a break for 1-2 days and wait until the sensitivity subsides. If in doubt, be sure to consult your dentist or dental hygienist.

Patient reviews

Which one should you choose?

Both methods use professional materials, are safe, effective and give the desired glow. What's in favour of one and what's in favour of the other?

Arguments for in-office bleaching:

  • faster
  • immediate results, "in one session", including preparation, in about two hours to achieve the desired shade
  • we can whiten each tooth individually, so that, for example, teeth discoloured after root canal treatment can be made to look like healthy teeth
  • can also be used in cases of tooth sensitivity or exposed dentin surfaces, sensitive areas are coated with protective varnish
  • we also ensure maximum protection of the gums during the procedure

Arguments in favour of the home procedure:

  • less time spent in the dentist's chair
  • whitening at your own pace, in the comfort of your home
  • more cost-effective
  • if you have tooth sensitivity, you can skip a few days while your teeth regenerate
  • You control the process, so you're sure to get the shade you want

After treatment

It's worth taking a few tips for a long-lasting glow!

for a few days

- Avoid smoking during the treatment and for at least the first 12 hours afterwards.
- To prevent possible tooth sensitivity, avoid eating extremely hot or cold foods and drinks and use toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth.
- After the treatment, avoid eating coloured foods (tea, coffee, cola, red wine, red wine, gastric juices, pepper dishes, curry, soy sauce, mustard, ketchup, beetroot, coloured fruits) for three days. You don't have to starve yourself, as you can eat dairy products, rice, potatoes, chicken breasts, white fish, tofu, water, baked goods, white wine; this is the so-called "white diet".
- Avoid the use of coloured toothpastes, mouth rinses that cause discolouration (e.g. Corsodyl, mouthwash with mouthwash).
- Do not put lipstick on your lips, especially dark-coloured lipstick.

in the long term

- Make sure you clean your teeth regularly and thoroughly.
- Eat more consciously and avoid foods and drinks that cause discolouration.
- Give up bad lifestyle habits (smoking, excessive coffee consumption).
- Get regular professional scaling and polishing by a dental hygienist.
