It provides outstanding cleaning performance with maximum comfort, making it ideal for patients with tooth or gum sensitivity, gingivitis, periodontal disease, or dental implants.

EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy – What You Should Know

EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) goes far beyond traditional ultrasonic cleaning.
It provides superior results through a gentler, more comfortable experience – making it the ideal choice for patients with sensitive teeth or gums, gum inflammation, periodontal disease, or dental implants.

  • Preventive and maintenance care – Helps prevent tooth decay, tartar build-up, and gum disease, while halting or even reversing early-stage conditions.
  • Minimally invasive – Significantly reduces the need for ultrasonic or manual instruments.
  • Highly effective – A special disclosing dye highlights bacterial biofilm, allowing targeted, precise, and efficient cleaning.
  • Exceptionally thorough – Cleans and polishes in a single step, reaching even hard-to-access areas such as interdental spaces, gum margins, and around implants.
  • Pain-free – The EMS “No Pain” technology ensures comfort even for patients with exposed root surfaces or hypersensitivity.
  • Gentle on teeth and restorations – Safe for enamel, gums, and all types of restorations – including delicate ceramic veneers.
  • Suitable for children – Gentle enough even for primary (milk) teeth.
  • Educational approach – Each session includes personalised oral hygiene guidance to support long-term home care.
  • A new level of comfort – Patients feel relaxed during treatment and leave with a fresh, revitalised smile.

What Is Biofilm

  • Biofilm (dental plaque) is a thin, invisible layer that adheres firmly to tooth surfaces, under the gums, and on restorations, fillings, and orthodontic appliances.
  • It consists of food debris, epithelial and immune cells, and millions of bacteria – both beneficial and harmful.
  • Over time, this sticky layer hardens into tartar (calculus), which damages teeth and gums and negatively affects aesthetics.
  • The pathogenic bacteria living in biofilm destroy tooth enamel and supporting tissues, leading to decay, gum recession, and periodontal disease.
  • Untreated biofilm and tartar can cause tooth or implant loss.
  • These bacteria also affect overall health. When they enter the bloodstream, they can weaken the immune system and contribute to systemic conditions such as joint disorders, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, skin and gynaecological problems, and even premature birth.Because biofilm is extremely resistant, regular tooth-brushing – no matter how thorough – cannot remove it completely.

The modern answer to this problem is EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy – the next generation of professional cleaning.

What Is The Goal of EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy

The treatment gently but completely removes biofilm from all surfaces in the mouth – teeth, implants, fillings, braces, and even the tongue.
It also eliminates early tartar deposits and surface discolourations and helps loosen hardened calculus.

The 8 Steps of EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy

The procedure follows an 8-step clinical protocol, designed to ensure maximum comfort, efficiency, and long-term results.

1. Oral-hygiene assessment

A detailed evaluation of teeth, implants, restorations, and soft tissues. If inflammation or other issues are detected, patients may be referred to a specialist.

2. Plaque-disclosing

A special disclosing solution is applied and then rinsed away, leaving the remaining biofilm highlighted in colour. This makes the otherwise invisible plaque clearly visible, allowing for targeted and more effective cleaning.

3. Education and advice

By showing patients where plaque builds up, we can personalise oral-care instructions and improve at-home hygiene routines.

4. Airflow® cleaning

Using the Airflow Prophylaxis Master, we remove plaque and early calculus from all surfaces – enamel, gums, implants, and appliances – with a combination of warm water, air, and a fine, chemical-free powder.
It cleans and polishes simultaneously, both above and below the gumline.

5. Perioflow® treatment

With a specialised nozzle, we clean under the gums and around implants, even in deep periodontal pockets.
This step supports periodontal therapy by enhancing deep cleaning and reducing inflammation.

6. Piezon® ultrasonic cleaning

Remaining hard deposits are removed with the Piezon device. Its intelligent “No-Pain” technology activates only when tartar is detected, ensuring precise and gentle cleaning without discomfort or damage to tooth surfaces

7. Final check

Teeth are inspected to ensure that all plaque and staining have been removed. Patients can see the results for themselves – a perfectly clean, smooth surface.

8. Recall and maintenance

Regular sessions maintain optimal oral health. Frequency depends on individual needs and lifestyle, but for healthy teeth we recommend every six months.
Because the method is gentle, it can be repeated indefinitely without risk.
