Root Canal Treatment – What You Should Know

Root canal therapy becomes necessary when deep decay, trauma, or other irritation causes inflammation or infection of the dental pulp – the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth.

During treatment, the infected or necrotic tissue is removed, the root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and hermetically sealed with a special filling material to prevent reinfection.

With modern microscopic techniques and local anaesthesia, the procedure is entirely painless.

A properly treated tooth can function normally for many years – often for a lifetime – without the need for extraction or replacement.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed

  • Deep decay reaching the pulp (nerve)
  • Tooth fracture or injury
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Persistent sensitivity or spontaneous pain
  • Swelling, tenderness when biting
  • Dark discolouration of the tooth

The Advantages of Microscopic Root Canal Treatment

  • Up to 30× magnification allows unparalleled visibility inside the tooth
  • Precise cleaning and shaping of even curved or hidden canals
  • Minimally invasive – preserves more of the natural tooth structure
  • Enables correction of previous unsuccessful root canal treatments
  • Greatly reduces the risk of complications and post-treatment pain
  • Allows predictable, long-lasting results even in complex molar cases

The Treatment Process

  1. Diagnosis and planning – A detailed examination supported by periapical radiographs or CBCT imaging identifies the extent of infection and the root canal anatomy.
  2. Canal cleaning – Under local anaesthesia, the infected tissue is removed and the root canals are cleaned and disinfected.
  3. Root filling – The canals are hermetically sealed with biocompatible filling material to prevent reinfection.
  4. Restoration – The tooth is rebuilt with a filling, inlay, or crown depending on the remaining tooth structure.
  5. Follow-up – Follow-up X-rays ensure proper healing and long-term stability.

Preventing the Need for Root Canal Treatment

Prevention is always the best approach. Regular dental check-ups and early treatment of small cavities can prevent deep decay and infection. Good oral hygiene and professional cleanings every six months are key to keeping your natural teeth healthy for life.
